External Studies
External Studies at Tabor Adelaide is an option that many have taken with success. Courses that are available externally include Theology, Christian Studies, Ministry, Counselling, Intercultural Studies, and Humanities, at all undergraduate levels; the more general Bachelor of Arts (Series 1) is also available. The Bachelor of Youth Work is currently being developed for external delivery. There is also a wide range of Postgraduate studies on offer. Teacher Education, Performing Arts, Music, Drama, YITS and the Post Graduate Diploma in Counselling are not available externally.
Some Advantages of Studying Externally
- No travelling. The subject materials are posted to your home.
- Easy access by email or phone to External Studies, which is fully geared in giving quality responses quickly for both administrative and academic questions.
- A course can be commenced at four set dates in the year, although it is recommended that new full-time students commence at the beginning of either semester 1 or 2. A new subject can be commenced at any of five set dates in the year. Full-time students are advised to align their studies with internal Semester dates.
- There is a 16 weeks period of study for a subject with a 2 week break mid-Semester, but it may be completed more quickly.
- Subject materials are delivered on computer ready CD-ROM, which contains audio of the lectures, and other study materials. This CD-ROM, need not be returned. Hard copy of the study materials is also forwarded to students living in Australia.
- Library books usually are needed for study and upon request will be mailed out free of charge. Students will need to pay for return postage. However books are not mailed out to overseas students.
- The Tabor Adelaide website offers much support to external students including the Library catalogue and many other resources.
- The short Study Techniques subject is a requirement of study at Tabor, unless the student has a prior Bachelor degree. This subject will be done at the commencement of a course. The student may also be required to do the subject Language Skills. Both of these subjects give valuable information about how to study, and explain the requirements of Tabor’s academic procedures.
- External students will also receive helpful information about study in the Student Handbook. As studying at tertiary level is a significant learning curve for many students, External Studies will give as much support and help as possible, particularly at commencement of a course.
- FEE-HELP is on offer to external students who qualify, as is AUSTUDY/ABSTUDY/YOUTH ALLOWANCE. The criteria for Fee-Help is that student is an Australian citizen, and is studying at least one subject in a specific course at degree level or above.
