Course Overview
The Year in the Son is a full-time, nationally-accredited VET (Vocational Education and Training) course. Students participate in competency-based education in a self-directed adult learning environment.
Year in the Son aims to help you express your deepening relationship with God in each area of your life. The topics explored are broad, and include:
- Spiritual Formation – practices of personal prayer and devotion
- Biblical Study – exploring Scripture in meaningful ways
- Theological Convictions – discussing the core doctrines of the Christianity to discover why and what you believe.
- Vocational Direction – discerning a meaningful purpose for your life, and taking steps towards further training and work
- Employability Skills – developing and enhancing your capacities as an employee in line with the National Employability Skills.
- Personal Development – increasing your resilience and self-awareness, strengthening personal values, and developing your self-management skills
- Interpersonal Skills – developing skills for confidently forming and strengthening significant relationships
- Creative Arts – exploring the things that matter to you through dance, drama, vocal ensemble, visual arts or creative writing.
- Social Justice – participating in God’s concern for compassion, justice and peace, on a local and global scale.
- Missional Living – proclaiming the Gospel with the whole of your life.
The learning and assessment which you will engage in as a student include an intentional combination of lectures, workshops, practical skills development, academic research, written work, peer-mentoring, life-coaching, field trips, service activities and experiential-learning exercises.
Year in the Son Adventures:
Year in the Son includes many real-life learning experiences which take place outside of traditional classroom settings. Our adventures as a community include:
- Orientation Weeks at the beginning of each semester
- Weekly Community-Building times including small groups
- Immerse – exploring the great story of the Bible in partnership with Youth Ministries Australia
- Spiritual Retreat
- Mid-Year Camp
- ‘Slum Survivor’ poverty experience, in partnership with TEAR Australia
- Family and Friends Night
- YITS Short Film Festival
- Various opportunities to serve both Christian communities and local community groups
